Week 15 2011

Here we make the big switch to fall vegetables, which seem quite appropriate.  This week we have butternut squash, delicata squash, garlic, onions, shallots, a couple bell peppers, a kohlrabi, radishes, celery, baby bok choy and lemon balm.

I think the farming season is finally getting to me.  Maybe it is the lack of highs in the 90s.  Maybe it is the 3000+ squash we harvested last week.  Maybe it is the thought that there is only five more weeks left this season.  But whatever the reason I think I am going nuts.  Completely insane.  Send in the men with the white coats crazy.  Why do I think this way?  Well yesterday we were harvesting, washing and packing cabbages.  Pretty typical day really.  But during this

Members ask me frequently what type of squash they are getting.  It seems there is interest in knowing not only where their food comes from but also what their food is.  Makes sense.  I figured perhaps I can help them out!  However I see this as an opportunity for me as well.  I can find out who is reading the blog and who isn’t.  Anyone who asks me what type of squash is in their share will reveal their failure to read the blog.  Those who don’t ask the questions will obviously have read the blog.  They may still not

First post-frost box of the season.  We harvested some of the warm season crops prior to the frost so we are still giving out a few of them (plus we saved the pepper plants so they will keep producing).  This week we have Sweet Dumpling squash, New England pie pumpkin, a few tomatoes, a few tomatillos, a few hot peppers, a whole bunch of bell peppers, a pound and a half of carrots, a small red cabbage, a couple cukes, some onions, some garlic, a

AmphibianShare I forgot to mention AmphibianShare for this week will be salamanders.

Garlic Planting Party I also forgot to mention the Garlic Planting Party scheduled for Saturday October 15th from 10:00 am until we are done.  It is a great opportunity to get out in the beautiful fall weather and start the 2012 season off right!  We will be serving lunch!  Please let me know if you plan to attend.

A couple additional things I thought about and have time to write about during lunch:

We currently have FruitShare available

Lots of f-words spoken last week including frost and freeze – two things that are never good for farming.  But we’ve gone through the drill before.  Some years we get very little notice.  Other years the weather folks are more clued in to the weather.  This year we had a couple of days to prepare, which helped.

On the positive side the sprinklers kept the peppers from dying.  Above is a picture of the pepper plants while the sprinklers were running.  You can see the icicles hanging off the

Week 13 2011

This week we are moving into the fall vegetables.  And after the frost tonight we will be done with the summer vegetables (for the most part).  New this week are spaghetti squash, edamame, salad mix and shallots.  In addition we have 3 pounds (!) of beans (had to harvest them before the frost), 6 bell peppers (see beans above), tomatoes (green zebras, pink ponderosa, and golden sunray to name a few), german butterball potatoes, tomatillos, garlic, cilantro and a bunch of hot

I heard the F-word last night.  I read it in the paper the other day as well.  Seems like a lot of people are using the F-word these days.  I don’t know about you but I find it pretty offensive – especially this time of year.  I guess I just have to get used to it.  It has permeated society.

The F-word I’m talking about is Frost.  The weather reports indicate a chance of frost this Wednesday night, especially in the northern suburbs.  We aren’t in the northern suburbs but

Week 12 2011

Another week of colorful vegetables!  This week we have lots of cucumbers, tomatoes — including green zebras, beautiful bell peppers, garlic — a variety called music which has really large cloves, cherry tomatoes, daikon radishes, red and white onions, green and yellow beans and a red cabbage.  Absent from this picture is the Thai basil, so I included a picture below.

Daikon Radishes

Lots of great news this week!  First on the competition front.  As you all know, I hate to brag about the farm but sometimes one has to toot their own horn to get any attention.  And we all love attention.  So what happened that is worth bragging about?  Well, my mother won the First Annual Burnett Title Salsa Throwdown!  Wait, why are you telling us this Chris?  Isn’t this the farm blog not the James Family blog?  Well, the reason is she not
