Week 19 2011

Final week of the season.  And what a week!  The box was so full we had to add a bag on top to hold all the produce! What was included this week?  Well, we had beets, carrots, broccoli, potatoes, bell peppers, three types of winter squash, lots of garlic, leeks, shallots, bok choi, daikon radishes, kohlrabi, radishes, brussels sprouts and kale.  That is one nice thing about being a member of a pure CSA.  You get all the produce we grow!

This is it.  The last week of the 2012 season.  I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

Equally important is the deadline for the Early Bird VeggieShares for next season.  Sign-up by the end of the month and get next year’s veggies at this year’s prices.  See the order from or contact me for more details.  And spread the word to friends and neighbors!

This is a tough week to be a newsletter writer.  There isn’t much to say!  The season is almost over.

Week 18 2011

Nearing the end of the season but the produce keeps coming on strong!  This week we are adding leeks to the mix.  Plus there are 3 # of potatoes in the box.  Hmm, maybe potato leek soup on this cold fall day?  Plus there are 1.5 # of carrots, six peppers, a bunch of radishes, salad mix, three winter squash (spaghetti, acorn and carnival), garlic, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kohhlrabi and broccoli.

First of all I want to thank everyone who came out to the farm to help plant garlic.  I felt it was a wonderful time and wish more of you could have enjoyed it with us.  Since I realize you all can’t, I thought I would put together a photo montage of the event to show you what you missed:

Here are some of the tomatoes that survived the two frosts.  They were delicious!

We had some wonderful smokey blue cheese from CheeseShare

Week 17 2011

Here is this week’s FamilyShare.  It is a great example of the benefit of joining a pure CSA farm.  This week the broccoli is coming on strong.  So what does a pure CSA farm do?  We give it out to our members!  Six gorgeous, large heads of broccoli this week!  Farms with other sales outlets would give their members a few heads and sell the rest through their farm stand, farmers’ market booth or wholesale it to a co-op.  Not our idea of a CSA.

We are starting the recruiting drive for next season.  If you sign-up by the end of October not only do you reserve your shares for next season but you also lock in this year’s price for next year’s produce.  How great is that?  There is an order form on the web site.

I make take credit for all the work done here on the farm but that is certainly not warranted.  For us to feed 300+ people it takes a crew of dedicated workers to plant, weed, harvest, wash and

Looks like we have summer for a few more days this week!

The big event of last week was the harvesting of the honey.  Dave — my bee partner — came over to assist.  It is good to have someone who knows bees and has the right equipment.

The first step in harvesting the honey is to remove the bees from the honey supers.  The honey supers are the top most boxes on the hives.  During the course of the season as the lower boxes are filled with bee
